As many of you are about to return back to university life or start/return to your graduate designer roles or your in-between jobs, I am going to give you 3 pieces of advice:

1. remember where you were this time last year, remember the challenges, remember the struggles, remember the hard work…..and look at what you achieved, what you learnt and what you overcame

2. look at where you are now and what you are doing….this may be a non designer role while you are looking and think about what you are learning i.e. organising, managing, and how you can use this in design. If you are at uni, get motivated for your final year and build on last year. If you are in your first design role, open your eyes, ears and absorb everything and work work work to get your career rolling. Regardless of where you are now, always keep moving, keep that momentum because challenges are uphill and it’s hard from a standing start!!

3. look at where you want to be in 12 months time and the journey you need to get there. Put the effort in from tomorrow and the reward will come between now and this time next year. Nothing is ever easy but as students/ graduates of interior design/architecture you already know that…..

So what’s the morale here:

Remember the first two points and be proud of the past 12 months and your victories, no matter how small or insignificant they may appear right now and what you are learning and have achieved against the odds. These are your foundations for the next 12 months…… because 1+2 always equals 3.
