For those that couldn’t attend the commercial design lecture, we spoke and explained the principles of Building Regs Part B – How to produce a building / floor fire strategy:

Typical fire compartmentation principles
Fire barriers above ceiling tiles and below RAF including setting out requirements
M&E penetrations and resolutions through FR Walls
Fire door principles regarding widths and occupation numbers and limits
The principals of fire detection including L1/L2 etc alarm types, FAP and FAR differences and locations
Fire core principles and escape routes
Service risers and store requirements

This was all designed during the sessions over a GA plan to really see the principles examining every aspect of how to do it and why (taking into account the commercial aspect of a project as well as the installation on site justifications!).

A simple fire strategy layout (over a basic GA) is a great way of demonstrating real world understanding principals and approach. It should also be worked out when designing your GA and not as a bolt on at the end ….Why? Because to be compliant to Building regulations, you will need a fire strategy plan that is fully integrated into your design proposal…… It’s incredibly difficult to retro fit fire corridors, fire barrier lines and overall compartmentation strategy once you have designed your scheme.

Having this in your folio and explaining it thoroughly with justification will add to demonstrating you are industry ready!!

There are only a few more sessions left then that will be the end of the commercial design series and live lectures in general. I will be doing 1:1 / 1:2 sessions with students to assist their FMP directly.
