In less than 6 months, many of you will be going for your first interviews applying for graduate / junior designer roles.

An interviewer doesn’t just look at your folio, they are interested in how you present your work, how you respond to them challenging you over your design and more importantly how you talk about design and the industry in general.

By this I mean your mindset approach to how you work and why….. and if this is aligned to the industry they will notice…..

In Mondays lecture I gave an brief overview of design and build commercial fit out and the differences between shell & core, cat A&B and much more. I also spoke about the process from client to tender to appointment to design process to site…..

Now if I was interviewing graduates and I spoke about a recent Cat B fitout the company has recently completed and if the graduate asked me about “the ERs we were given and if we had any Derogations due to site unknowns following strip out”…..(and they knew what they were talking about!) that graduate would definitely stand out!!!

Education is education….. learn as much as you can from where ever you can to get ahead of the curve!
