Next time you design a piece of joinery i.e. a bar, reception desk, seating unit in a restaurant, ask yourself the following questions:

1. how is this actually going to be built? Flat pack, off site and installed? Carcass then clad?
2. when in the build stage will this be installed? last week, mid proj CT to allow for intergation of other elements?
3. how does this relate to other trades? first fix electrical relationship?

Instead of only talking about the importance of your joinery item from a designer approach (the hero’s shot that inspires everything else), or the user experience (the focal point for them to explore other areas), remember to talk about the realities of how the installation process of these elements in the big fit out process……

It’s the latter that shows real world thinking, industry standards and can make all the difference in a job interview.
