Ok so let’s break down what 1 yr work experience should look like (atleast what I expect to see)
1. Understands how to put a drawing package together. I MEAN from existing to a full set of plans (GA/RCP/SP/FF/SETTING OUT/PARTITIONS,ETC). Demonstrate the difference between preliminary/tender and a construction drawing package
2. Ability to cross reference elevations, details, etc so create a large body of work quickly. This also means understanding drawing numbers, drawing schedules, etc. Value engineer, tier designing and finishes to work to a budget.
3. Detail beyond the plan. By this I mean focusing on joinery, wall junctions and intersections. Real world design that focuses beyond the imagery to focus on how something is built, what it intersects with and why….Problem solve before it’s built to prove it will works!!!
4. Understand what the actual design process is on a project. By this I mean beyond he indicative RIBA 1-7. I mean understand the level and stages of client sign off, contractor involvement, the tender process etc. Understanding of the work needed and what is expected to be signed off to develop an area of layout further
5. Processes, procedures, protocols and responsibilities. By this I mean the necessary documentation, filing, MIRS, minute taking, etc as well as drawing issue sheets, etc
6. Time management, deadlines, design and delivery programme. This is all working to a budget against the clock……learning to work fast, efficiently and productively.
Now on a project you will learn all of the above and more….There is nothing like real world experience especially when it comes to being on site.
However you can actually learn the above without being in a job. In fact you could learn / know / demonstrate all of the above by the time you leave university …… Demonstrate you can do the above (ontop of your creativity) and you can overcome the 1 yr experience and be bankable straight away!!!
