So following the previous post, let’s talk about what you can add to your CV in the SKILLS SECTION easily that by demonstrating these elements in your projects, shows you have advanced understanding of the design management process. This is just as important as sketching, CAD, visuals etc.
It is my intention to add as many skills as i can to assist you in growing your design skillset and mindset to assist in the end goal – EMPLOYMENT!
These are a few of what I am talking about:
1. DTM- design team meetings / minutes. Everytime you sit down with your team, lecturer, etc to have a discussion about your project, your progress, etc you document it. You should have weekly meetings, even if it’s just yourself so You can document your task, progress etc. Every week you refer to the previous week’s minutes and update and cross off with a date if finished then move onto the floor next point
Every project needs weekly reports to update project leaders, Management etc and also when you have subcontractors, this documents who is doing what, project status etc.Demonstrate this shows real world thinking.
2. PROGRAMME /TIMELINE – This outlines production of work, mtgs, milestones (sign off stages to move forward etc). This will include presnlentations, drawing packages, visuals etc. This is how you manage the project status against the deadline date so you can organise your time and what you are producing. This can be project stages, workload etc
WHY? Every project needs something to work against to understand if you are on track to complete against the hours/cost to design the project. Working 12 hours every day you are understaffed, behind or haven’t allowed for the right workload against the project expectations. Demonstrate this shows real world thinking.
3. DRM/DRS – design responsibility matrix/schedule. This outlines who is responsible for what and by date deadline in the timeline programme. Thai is key when working in a team and design information, like a batton in a relay race is vital for the next stage of the project to be successful. A delay or change has an impact on everyone and the timeline.
WHY? Every project needs something to understand who is doing what and relate to the programme timeline. Demonstrate this shows real world thinking.
These are just a few that are part of the PROJECT DESIGN JOURNAL outlining yr drawing numbering system, FF&E schedules, presentation and organisation notes and cross referencing and coding, tiering areas and finishes and overal design management skills. Everything you should be noting in your SKILLSET SECTION in your CV.
It’s these elements that add that extra % plus gets you industry ready.
