SPACE…….How you use it is part and parcel of being an interior designer / interior architect and more importantly you should be able to justify every sqm. Why? well I am sure you are aware, every property has a value & the land has a price. When you are designing that interior, the client has already paid a price for every sqm for ownership or rental (i.e. commercial). Your interior fitout has a price per sqm. The client has a budget for both and it is your price per sqm that gets squeezed. I believe space falls into the following categories: 1. Circulation space for the human traffic to flow -suitable for the quantities. A 1.8m wide corridor is acceptable. A 4m corridor must be justified!2. Living / working space for the customers / staff -the correct ergonomics for the quantity.3. Breathing space for grand visual impact -i.e void that has a purpose & can be justified.4. Dead space – where a plan has areas that cannot be used for any of the above yet costs the client money. This is often where you have thought about the inside of the room but not the outside.Start thinking of your plan with a financial value mindset for every sqm. Learn to rob from peter to give to paul…… And always look for those dead spaces and give them a purpose!
