To give yourself the best opportunity to graduate and land your first job, you need to have 2 road maps running during your time at university….1. the roadmap your course & tutors have set out for you, their curriculum, their projects and programme.2. the road map you choose to help with your own design growth and fill in the blanks, to reinforce your uni course roadmap. Why do you need 2 road maps? University can only teach so much in the limited time and teaching hours they have …..fact…. they cannot give you 1-1 tuition for 3 solid years!! Both roadmaps should intertwine. What you learn in one your practise in the other and develop and visa versa. Both should run concurrently for maximum design development and growth!! For those that have graduated, your college roadmap should be replaced by your new career roadmap…. which means your new design company is responsible for your growth. But don’t rely on that alone. You still need to do your own roadmap to accelerate your growth more…. If you haven’t found a job yet, double down on your own roadmap!!Education should be continuous…accept that you will be learning throughout your design career (even 27 years further ahead of you all, I am always growing as a designer, pushing boundaries etc in every project, learning new details and skills via contractors, etc) …it should be key to pushing yourself and your career moving forward…… How fast, well that’s up to you!!! 2nd year students dont waste the summer!!!Plot your roadmap and go back to uni with some new skills, new projects under your belt, new approaches to design, new experiences and hit that 3rd year running!!!
