What’s the most valuable commodity in the world? The answer is….

What’s the most valuable commodity in the world? The answer is TIME…… It’s what we spend frivolously, demand from others and waste all too easily. However we don’t value it until we give it a currency to make it more realistic and only then do we realise it’s real value.

So here’s the thing:

1. I spend on average 1 hour a day (minimum including weekends) on this LinkedIn page composing/writing posts and finding job vacancies for you (alot of the latter lately!!).

2. I spend 1 1/2 hours a week prepping a lecture and 1 1/2 hours giving that lecture online. To those that attend I know you are seeing the return on this investment from your feedback so thankyou.

3. I spend on average 2 hours a week minimum responding to emails, reviewing your folios and CVs.

4. I am NOT affiliated with any university nor am I on a monthly payroll……So to give this more context so you can relate to this, let’s do the maths:

5. My basic rate is £50 per hour (26 years experience is valuable!). I spend on average 12 hours a week on this group.

6. Basic hours spent X daily rate = £600 per week.

7. £600 X 4= £2400 of my time spent on this group every month.

8. This group has been running since march.

9. I have invested 7 months of my time.

10. 7 X £2400= £16800 so far invested in this group and you…..Let’s think about that for a second and let it sink in…..So now here’s the other thing,

11. I am investing in you every time I post, write, respond or lecture to one or to all 1300+ of you.

12. It may be a job advert, it maybe a design philosophy, it maybe a design technique used in the real world or a free lecture to increase your knowledge and hopefully stimulate you into a new approach to the same old problem.

13. I don’t ever expect to ever see a personal return on my investment.

14. I expect to see you succeed and get ahead of the curve, get a job and get your career going asap.

15. There will be a small number of people who invest in you in life. Yes you employer will invest as you are on their payroll and they expect a return. Prior to getting a design job, only a small few will invest in you with no expectation of a return. Your college tutors (above and beyond their paid time!), your family, me (via this group) and lastly and most importantly you! Others invest in you but you should be investing double what everyone else is! Only you are holding you back…..

Spend your time wisely and invest in yourself to get ahead. Become wealthy in your design knowledge, your growth and your skillsets and the returns will come…..
