Why do alot of junior designer roles request 1-2 years experience?
1. Because it takes alot of time, effort, energy and money to transition a graduate from university to the “real world” of design.
2. Most juniors will leave after 1-2 years hoping to step up to a middle weight position with more money!!
You see the biggest concern when employing a graduate is that the employer will spend 2 years training up a graduate for someone else to benefit from and then they are back to zero again!!! (FYI this is why I run my lectures and this LinkedIn page – to try and get you ahead of the curve asap and industry ready with zero real world experience).
How do you instill confidence in a potential employer? The secret is your answer to a very simple question you will/should be asked:
“Why do you want to work for this company?”
Your answer should compliment them (specify a certain project or two always helps) on their creativity, execution and overall philosophy, etc etc etc……..THEN you spin it about YOU, what a great opportunity it is, how you expect to learn, grow and develop as a design under THEIR supervision with your (natural) talent and skill set to excel within the COMPANY (long term). How you see yourself growing, developing and becoming an integral member of the team and being involved in more projects (re reference project above already mentioned) and be part of the continuous growth of the company.
Every opportunity, be it a simple question outlined above, should be considered, planned in advance and ready to be spun to your advantage.
