So when I’m interviewing someone and going through their folios, I always ask questions, and not the most obvious.
When a design talks about a visual, I always ask further beyond the obvious, looking for something that tells me more about them.
Why? Because I have to know how far into the design they have gone. Have they looked at just the aesthetic or have they really designed something with substance, with realism, with a real world designers mindset
Example… Someone presents me with a visual of a hotel bedroom. I will ask about the windows:
How are you treating daylight as a factor in the bedroom?
Tell me about the window film? Privacy? Solar? Frosted? External design feature?
What makeup of shade have you created? Sheers and curtain combo? Roller blinds?
What’s your approach to blackout? Roller blind inside window recess with guides or external and a large overhang on each side?
Manual or automatic?
Talk to me about this level of detail and you tell me far more about you as a designer, your mindset and level of thinking…
So the question is to what level of detail have you gone to in your project?
