In the interview scenario, always ask more than just about “the perks…”

In an interview, there will always be the winding down when they ask if you have any questions. Any candidate that has zero questions always fascinated me regarding their interest in both the position, the company and them as a person.

1. Always ask about the role, responsibilities, number of projects working on, where they see you in 3 years etc, how long on each project, what stage, will you see a project from start to finish etc

2. Yes ask about WFH, opportunities to travel, normal working hours , real working hours expected (yes the numbers often aren’t the same!), etc

3. Ask about a specific project that you have like that they have done or you are curious about…. This to me speaks volumes. If you have done your research you should have at least 2 favourite projects. Ask about how long the design period/ concept stage was? How long was the site period to build? Did they have any discoverables on site? Did the design change from the concept due to unforeseen circumstances (budget/supplier issues/lead time)? How many people were working on the project and at what stages? What would my involvement have been? How often did you go to site? Did you attend regular site meetings?

Asking these curious design lead and real world questions shows another level of mindset that is appealing to potential employers…
