Ok so I get emails regularly from graduates asking what do I do now……. Often because university doesn’t teach you about what happens next or more importantly, and the truth is your nolonger at university and so their focus on the current third year students…..
1. Dont stand still. The worse thing to do is be stagnant. Job searching can take weeks, months, or longer. You have to be the motivator. You have to keep learning, developing, growing as a designer.
2. Build on what you have. More your skills forward. YouTube, etc is great to take them to the next level and it’s free
3. Learn something new. Write a list, do the research and then learn that skill and add it to your CV. Again YouTube, the internet and more is there for you
4. Update an old project Red pen a plan, detail, visual with notes from your 2nd year to show growth and development. Have it as a breaker between projects just to start adding interest to your folio
5. Read my blog. Simple. You will learn more in an hour’s reading that will change your mindset, knowledge and approach to design and it will move you on from a graduate designer. It will gain you knowledge and experience without actually doing the work. Demonstrate the principles and ideas in your folio, CV and interview to really stand out
And that’s the key. After 6 months of looking for employment, you should not still be a graduate designer. Regardless of having a job. Change the narrative yourself. Start moving forward and get ahead of the curve…
